No Child Left Behind
The Elementary and Secondary Education Act, more formally known as No Child Left Behind, is the nation’s major federal law that governs education in grades pre-kindergarten through high school. Under No Child Left Behind public schools must participate in annual testing in specific academic areas and grades that are outlined in the law. This requirement includes students in special education under IDEA. These required assessments were put into place to determine if schools were adequately educating their students. The scores from these assessments are used to see if schools are achieving "adequate yearly progress" of AYP. There are several assessment options for students with disabilities that qualify under IDEA. They can participate in the same assessments the general education students take based on the state's grade level achievement expectations. The second option is to participate in the same assessments the general education students take based on grade level achievement expectations with appropriate accommodations. The third option is taking an alternate assessment based on the state's grade level achievement expectations. The fourth option is taking an alternative assessment based on grade level academic content standards and scored against modified achievement standards. The fifth option is taking an alternative assessment aligned with grade level academic content standards and scored against alternate academic achievement standards.
