Learning Styles Inventory
To become effective teachers it is important to find out how each student learns best so they can be taught in a way that promotes their learning. The learning styles inventory is an assessment that determines how students learn best. Dr. Howard Gardner a psychologist and professor of neuroscience at Harvard University developed the theory of multiple intelligence which the learning styles inventory is based off of. According to Gardner people have nine different intelligence types instead of the popular belief that people are born with one general intelligence. Each person has their own preferences and strengths within these different intelligence types which means no two people have the same intelligence. These types include:
- Linguistic- Using language to express thoughts, feelings, and to understand others.
- Logical/Mathematical- Understanding the underlying principles of some kind of casual system and the ability to manipulate numbers, quantities, and operations.
- Musical- The ability to think in music; to hear patterns, recognize them, and manipulate them.
- Body/Kinesthetic- Using your whole body or parts of your body to solve problems, make something, or put on a performance.
- Spatial- Being able to picture the spatial world in your mind.
- Naturalist- Being able to discriminate between living things and being sensitive toward other features of the natural world.
- Intrapersonal- Understanding yourself and knowing who you are, what you can do, what you what to do, how you react to things, and your personal preferences
- Interpersonal- Understanding other people.
- Existential- Being able to pose and ponder questions about life, death, and ultimate realities.
