Individuals with Disabilities Act
To begin special education services, students must first have an IEP and be identified as qualifying for services. This is done through multiple types of assessments over a long period of time. The Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) is a federal law that governs how states and public agencies regulate education services to children from birth to 21. IDEA states that a student must be involved in various testing and assessments to measure and determine if they qualify for special education. Also IDEA states that a student's IEP must contain appropriate goals for that individual student based on age appropriate assessments. These assessments are given to the student to see what their strengths, weaknesses, likes, and dislikes are. Then the special education teacher can work with the student to create goals. Future assessments are done to make sure the student is progressing to meet their short term goals and eventually their long term goals for post-secondary.
